“英国读者最喜爱的100本小说”评选结果揭晓

英国广播公司BBC日前在伦敦公布了“100本最受英国读者喜爱的小说”的评选结果。在这次完全由读者投票决定的评选中,19世纪的古典小说家狄更斯和20 世纪的畅销书作家特利·普里切特(Terry Pratchett)各有5部小说入选,成为入选作品最多的作家。紧随其后的是3位儿童文学作家,以创作《哈利.波特》系列成名的女作家J.K.罗琳、杰奎琳·威尔逊(Jacqueline Wilson)和已故的罗阿尔德·达尔(Roald Dahl),各有四部作品入选。
这次评选活动从4月17日开始,在随后两个星期的时间内,共有14万名英国读者对自己喜欢的小说进行了提名,涉及的文学作品超过7000种。这是在英国本土举办的同类评选活动中,有史以来参与人数最多的一次。英国广播公司表示,公众对这项活动表现出来的热情使其感到非常意外和振奋。
评选结果于5月17日在BBC二台和该公司网站上同时公布,全世界多家媒体对此事进行了详细报道。
100本入选作品中虽然有《尤利西斯》和《战争与和平》这样的严肃文学作品,但主要是最近30年中出版的畅销小说,数量为41种。据BBC统计,曾经被拍成电影的作品达到了70种。此外,入选作品中的英国作品为66种。
BBC称主办这次活动的目的是“使那些曾经给整个国家带来快乐的书籍重新回到社会生活的中心,让爱书人和那些离开学校后再未读过书的人能够一起将注意力移回到这些书籍上来。”
现在公布的入选名单是按书名的字母排序。BBC表示,将在稍后开展另一项活动,评选出其中最受欢迎的前10名小说。
